Struggling not to Spend, Spend, SPEND

A few months ago, my Hubby started a new job, which included a pay increase.  Our goal since then has been to live on the same income that we were already living on and to use the increase to go into savings and to pay down our credit card debt.

We've been doing well with the credit card debt repayment.  We've cut that debt down from $13,402.24 to $7,879.50.  So we've paid off $5,522.74 so far this year. Pretty darn good.

Also, when Hubby started his new job, we set it up so a portion of his pay increase would go directly into our savings account so what we didn't see, we would never miss.  I strongly recommend this whenever you get a pay increase.  It was such an easy transition and we never would have been this disciplined to save the money every single week by ourselves.

Even though I feel like those things are going well, I know that we're spending more than we used to.  I really wanted to stick to spending the same amount we were before, but it's hard when you've been doing without certain things for so long and now you actually have the money for them.  It's hard to keep saying no or to keep putting purchases off.

I'm not talking about going on vacations and buying new cars.  I'm talking about needing things around the house.  For years, we've wanted to put in a stepping stone walkway out front of our house.  Without it, we were walking through grass back and forth to our cars and tracking grass and dirt into both the house and the car.  So we finally went out and bought the stepping stones and now we love our new walkway.

Other things we've been spending more on are going out to eat just a little more often, getting the car washed more often, getting our two dogs groomed more often, among other things.

I guess you could say, we're spending more money on maintaining what we have.  It's not like we're going out and buying a bunch of new gadgets, etc.  And I know the things we're spending money on are not frivolous.  They are well thought out and planned for.  And I'm okay with that.  Or atleast trying to be okay with it.

I think I'm just afraid of getting carried away with purchases or spending, thinking we can afford it.  But we can't.  Even if we have the cash to spend, we shouldn't.  We have no business buying too much extra stuff when we still have credit card debt.  Nevermind the fact that we also have student loans, a car payment and a mortgage.

All this to say, it's hard.  Just like it's hard not to be tempted to charge up credit cards.  It's also hard to live below your means.  This personal finance stuff is work.  And everyday tough choices are thrown at you and you have to make tough decisions.

Whenever I'm faced with the temptation to purchase or spend money on something, I try to think it through.   Would it make my life happier? Would I regret buying it in a week?  Can I find it cheaper elsewhere?  Can we hold off and buy it at a later date? Would I have bought this several months ago, before Hubby got the raise?

Some days I feel great about how we're doing financially - especially in the last few months.  Other days, I get bummed.  I regret purchases and I second guess decisions.  But I keep going, trying my best.  Trying to propel ourselves into a better place.

March Credit Card Debt Recap

I'm a little late with this, but I wanted to post the recap of our credit card debt totals for the month of March.  At the start of 2011, we had $13,402.24 in credit card debt that we're committed to paying off as quickly as possible.

At the beginning of March our credit card totals looked like this:

Chase 1 - $8,352.45
Chase 2 - $0
CitiCard - $3,518.25

Total - $11,870.70

And then at the end of March, our totals looked like this:

Chase 1 - $0
Chase 2 - $0
CitiCard1 - $3,682.25
Citicard2 - $4,197.25

Total - $7,879.50 - CAN YOU BELIEVE IT!!!!

In the month of March, we paid off $3,991.20 worth of credit card debt!!!  We truely kicked butt last month.  If you missed my post on how we accomplished this and why we now have an extra credit card, check it out over here

To sum it up - we used some savings to pay off the CitiCard1, then took the (12.24% interest) Chase1 card and transferred part of the balance to my CitiCard1 for 0% and another part of the balance to Hubby's new CitiCard2 for 0%.  Oh, and we used some of the savings to pay off the remainder left on the Chase1.  Got it?

So anyway, we now have an extra card but the only two cards with balances are both at 0% - one for a year and one for 18 months.  So that's good.  Now we are focusing on replenishing our savings and only paying the minimums on those two cards for a little bit.  Once our savings is in a good place, we'll get back to paying off debt at a quicker rate.

Coupons: It never hurts to ask!

The other day I was planning on doing some shopping at Payless.  The kiddos needed some sandles since the warm weather is (much too slowly) approaching.

As you know, my motto is "Why pay more if you don't have to?" so of course I was hunting for coupons.  Then I remembered that I had received a Payless 20% off your entire purchase coupon in my email the other day.  (Always sign up for those email offers - you never know when they may come in handy!)

So I found the coupon and tried to print it.  But for some reason my printer wasn't finding the wireless connection to my computer. Argh, so frustrating.  I tried three times and couldn't get it to print.  So I left the house and went to Payless anyway.  I had a $5 off coupon in my purse and figured I'd use that if I had to, but since the 20% off would have been a much better offer, I was bummed.

I went in and found three pairs of shoes and a pack of socks for my kiddos.  I went up to the register where two employees were and politely told them of my situation with the email coupon that wouldn't print because my printer was acting wacky.  I asked if they'd honor the coupon since I obviously had it, just not on me.

The women looked at each other, very uncertain, and basically told me no. I was surprised because I thought that since I was purchasing so much, that they could be kind enough to honor the coupon. They then suggested I find the coupon through my phone's email function.

I was a little disappointed at that suggestion because I had my three year old with me, my hands full and now I was going to have to spend five minutes trying to find this thing on my phone.  Like most people, I get A LOT of email.  This was not going to be an easy task and I was upset that they were making me jump through hoops, but I kept my cool.

As I was starting to log into my email account through my phone, one of the employees pointed out a sign on the counter.  It was about signing up for their text message sale and coupon alerts.  If you text'd them right then to sign up, it automatically text'd you back with the 20% off coupon.

So I jumped through those hoops and finally got my coupon for 20% off my purchase.  It saved me $14.59 so obviously that was a much better deal than my $5 coupon, which I saved for another day since it doesn't expire until November.

Anyway, my point is this, if you don't have a coupon, ask a sales associate, they may be able to help you with an actual coupon or with a way to get more coupons.  If I hadn't asked, I would have missed out on the additional savings and future savings that I might get from the text alerts.

Using Savings to Pay Off Debt

Hubby and I have been hard at work paying off our credit card debt for a while now, and most seriously since January of this year.  You can read all about it here.

We started the year off with $13,402.24 in credit card debt on our three major credit cards.  In January and February, we managed to pay off $1,531.54 of that debt.  We were lucky to have extra money at the time to knock out that big chunk of debt and really get us moving in the right direction.

Then March came along and we really wanted to keep going with the same momentum.  But we didn't have the extra funds to put towards it.  We used our tax refund to pad our savings and to pay off a few balances on store cards.

It felt good to do those things and eliminate some of our monthly bills. But it still left us wanting more.  We wanted to pay off more.  We wanted to eliminate more of our monthly bills, cut more of our debt, and we wanted to lessen the amount we were wasting on interest fees.

So we came up with a plan.  Probably one of the best plans we've had.  And it will save us a good amount of money in the long run.

We ended up using our savings and the sale of some stock to pay off one of our credit cards - the CitiCard that had a $3,573.25 balance at 0%.

If you've been following along, you might remember that we had planned on paying off this card last since it had 0% interest for another year.  We had wanted to pay off the Chase card first since it had the higher interest rate.  Well, we changed our minds.

We decided to pay off the CitiCard using our savings because that card had the lowest balance and by eliminating that, we could easily eliminate an entire monthly bill.  Freeing up more money to pay off the Chase card with the higher balance of $8,464.49.

You following?  I know it gets confusing. (Another reason to avoid credit card debt!)

Anyway, the other benefit to paying off the CitiCard first was that it would free up that card and it's 0% balance transfer offer that was still available for another year.

Then we transferred part of the Chase balance onto the CitiCard,  up to it's credit limit.  It cost us 3% in balance transfer fees, but we're still easily savings hundreds of dollars in interest fees, since the CitiCard is 0% for another year.

Next we were left with the remaining balance on the Chase that we wanted to get rid of.  We didn't want to continue wasting money on interest fees.  So Hubby applied for his own CitiCard and received a 0% balance transfer offer for 18 months.  So we transferred more of the Chase balance onto that.  Again, we paid the 3% balance transfer fee, but again, it was well worth it with the savings of not paying interest for 18 months.

Then we paid off the remaining balance on the Chase and it's so completely exhilarating to see that $0 balance on that card that was over $15,000 not that long ago.  Yea, we now have the two CitiCards to pay off, but with 0% interest, all of our payments will go to reducing those balances and they'll be paid off much, much, MUCH quicker.

Still with me here?  I know, it's probably boring you to tears, but for me, it's super exciting.  Because we're taking charge of our finances.  We're not just sitting down and accepting high interest rates (or any interest!).  We've taken actions to put ourselves in a much better position to pay off our debts.

Now our goal is to restock our savings account, which we greatly depleted.  Then we'll work on paying off my CitiCard, which we'll call CitiCard1, first since that 0% rate is for a year and the CitiCard2 0% rate is for 18 months.  Coming up next, I'll post the recap from March, which will show all the progress me made last month!
