Hidden source of Mercury in many foods

I love reading the latest health news articles on Wellness360. I find so many interesting studies that have been done and many issues that relate directly to my life. It is also how I have stayed alert to the whole peanut butter products recall from that plant in Georgia. Oh, and all the past recalls on various contaminated foods.

But this morning I happened upon an article that was published Monday 1/26/09. This article alerted me that mercury has been found in almost half of products that contain High Fructose Corn Syrup. Not good. Seriously, HFCS is bad enough in itself, but now they find that it can contain mercury.

High Fructose Corn Syrup is in soooo many foods and drinks. And there's no way to tell which ones use the kind containing mercury. When many of the food items were tested, dairy products, dressings and condiments that contained HFCS, were most likely to contain the kind with mercury. But there are many other foods that contain mercury in the HFCS.

How many of these foods do you think you eat? How about your children? There's really no way to tell... unless you strictly avoid HFCS foods altogether. Something to definitely think about there because obviously mercury is no good to your body, your children and the earth.

This stuff frustrates me so much and makes me wish I could switch our family to a completely organic diet. But that gets so costly and there aren't a whole lot of organic products in the stores near us. They are getting more all the time, but there certainly aren't enough.

As I noted above, it is about half of HFCS foods that contain mercury in them. So that means there is a HFCS that does not contain mercury. It's just that not all producers are using it. Why????? Is it more costly? That would be my guess, but who knows. We need to seriously push manufacturers to avoid mercury in OUR foods. It seems absurd that they should be allowed to get away with this, right?

As for me, I'll be reading nutrition labels even more than I already do, and I'll be making an effort to avoid HFCS. I know it can be difficult since it's in sooo many foods. But really, I don't want to take the chances with my health, and especially my children's health.

Find the original article on Wellness360.com under News Resources for 1/26/09. Article is titled Study Finds High-Fructose Corn Syrup Contains Mercury.

$15 for taking a few surveys

One of the questions I occasionally get is if you can really make money by taking surveys. Yes, you can! And I do.

It's nothing that's going to make me rich, but it's a little extra income that I can earn while I'm home with my kids. I can do a survey or two during their nap or while I'm watching TV in the evening. It's easy.

Now, surely, there are some not-so-good survey companies out there. I've tried a few and stopped using them when I saw how little I was paid for each survey. And a few I stopped doing surveys for because the surveys were ridiculously long.

Anyway, every once in awhile I get a check for the surveys I have done with the various companies. Some pay for each survey individually, but most pay you in a lump sum after you've accumulated enough cash in your account.

This is what happened the other day for me. I just happened to be checking on my account with Global Opinions Panel and I was super-excited to see that I had enough to cash out for a $15 check!!!

I had no idea I had this much, because in the past I only had enough to cash out for $5 at a time. So this was a nice surprise for me! Turns out, the reason I had so much in my account is that I was paid $10 for one survey I did in December... and I didn't even know it, lol.

Soooo, if you've been skeptical of joining survey companies... don't be! Just make sure you are joining a reputable company and the surveys aren't always terribly long for very little pay. (The average amount I get per survey is $2 or so. Sometimes more, sometimes less... depending on the length of the survey.)

For a list of good survey sites, look up there on my left sidebar.

Our garbage is getting greener

So, I've talked about how we've been trying to avoid the evil plastic bags. We always use cloth bags when we shop for groceries and we're getting better at remembering to use them for other shopping trips.

But, now I've decided to stop buying regular plastic garbage bags. I looked into buying biodegradable trash bags which are supposed to break down, unlike regular plastic bags which never completely break down. But the problem is that even biodegradable bags won't break down properly because they are buried under thousands of pounds of other garbage in landfills.

The biodegradable bags need air to break them down, but no air can get through to them. This is also why you can find almost fresh food buried deep down in the landfills because the air can't get to it to spoil it.

Anyway, I realized the biodegradable bags weren't gonna cut it. And I was reading that another option is to buy recycled trash bags.

So I ended up finding these Seventh Generation Trash Bags at Drugstore.com. These bags are made from 100% recycled plastic (30% of which is post-consumer).

Why are these better? Well, it's always better to buy something made from recycled materials. And these bags require 40% less energy when they are produced, as opposed to producing regular non-recycled garbage bags.

They do cost a little more than regular trash bags, but it's one area where I'm willing to spend a little more on. And hey, I've saved so much money from using cloth napkins and cloth cleaning towels, that I guess I can pass some of that savings onto paying for these trash bags.

And maybe paying more for these bags will inspire me to use less of them. How? By creating less trash... not wasting food, buying things with less packaging, repurposing things that were meant for the trash. Hmmm... something to think about.

$10 off at Drugstore.com

New customers can get a whopping $10 off your purchase of $50 or more at Drugstore.com! Or, if you're not spending that much, you can get $5 off your purchase of $30 or more.

This is a great promo that has been extended through 3/31/09 and does not include prescription orders. No coupon code necessary, just click through the link for the discount to be applied.

Also, you'll automatically get free shipping on your 1st order of $25 or more!

Oh, and of course, you can't forget the Drugstore.com dollars that you earn with every order! They give you 5% back on every order and you can use that towards a future purchase.

I know that many people get some of their drugstore items for free or super cheap at their local drugstores. But I like to use Drugstore.com on the things that I know rarely go on sale or rarely have coupons offered for them in my local stores. And if you look around their site, you'll notice they have sales and coupons as well, not to mention the cash back and free shipping!

$1.00 Printable Grocery Coupon

I looooove the Birds Eye Voila! meals. You ever have them? They are awesome meals with chicken, shrimp or steak mixed in with noodles and veggies. YUM!

Oh, and they cook on the stove top pretty darn quickly.... which is why we love em. I mean, really, with two little ones running circles around us, there's hardly the time (or the patience) to make big fancy meals from scratch every night.

Anyway, I'm rambling and you don't really care what we eat for dinner. Here's the important part... I was over-joyed when I found this $1.00 off coupon today. FYI: You can print two of em. Enjoy! I know I will.

Rite Aid $5.00 Coupon & a Diaper Deal

Print this coupon and take $5.00 off your Rite Aid purchase of $25 or more.

Coupon doesn't expire until 3/13/09, so there's plenty of time to use it. Print a few if you plan to make multiple trips because these coupons have a habit of disappearing!

**Last night we used one of these coupons for a sweet diaper deal! The Huggies & Pull Ups Jumbo packs are on sale for $9.99 through 1/17/09. We bought 1 pack of Huggies and 2 packs of Pull Ups which came to $29.97.

We used the $5 off coupon, two $2.00 off Pull Ups coupons and a $1.50 off Huggies coupon. So we paid $19.47 for 3 packs of diapers... not bad.

BUT.... there's a $2.00 Single Check Rebate for the Huggies/Pull Ups, so we'll get that back AND since we purchased at least $25 of Kimberly Clark products, we'll get a $10 Rite Aid gift card. So that's another $12 knocked off, bringing our total to $7.47!

And of course we can't forget about the cash back from Caregiver's Marketplace! When I submit my receipt, I'll get $0.75 back per pack of diapers & pull ups. Bringing my total for 3 packs of diapers to $5.22! Yay, now that's what I call a deal! Happy dance!**

Thanks so much to Abundant Food Savings for the heads up!

Children's Place SCAM

Ok, so let's start out by saying I looove The Children's Place. Their clothes are adorable and are well made. They don't shrink or pill up after one wearing and washing. They also offer some fantastic sales and you can scoop up some amazing clothes pretty cheaply. And their flat rate shipping is nice too.

BUT.... and this is a big but... you gotta watch what they charge you! Seriously, I've placed many orders with them over the past 3 years and I didn't even realize this blatant scam until my last order.

Pay attention. Then check your orders to see if this has happened to you as well.

After going through the entire check-out process with my last order, I happened to notice that on my purchase I was charged $0.37 for tax. Hmmm.... you might be thinking ok, no big deal. Well it is a big deal when the state of NJ does not charge tax on clothing.

I wondered if it was a tax on the shipping charges, as I had heard of the tax law changed that allowed for the tax on the shipping charge. But NJ state sales tax is 7%.... so how did they come up with $0.37???? The shipping was a flat-rate $5.00. So if this was a tax on the shipping charge, it would have been $0.35.

(Yes I know it's only a few cents, but it's the principal of the matter, ya know? Besides, it's not like this money is going to the state or anything. They pay what they have to... not extra!)

So I emailed The Children's Place and asked what the tax was charged for. They emailed back with a quick response saying that it was a shipping tax, which was standard practice. Hmmmm. Really??? It's their standard practice to overcharge customers with the incorrect tax?

Soooo... getting angrier by the moment, I emailed back saying that NJ sales tax is 7% and I was simply wondering how they computed 7% of $5.00 to equal $0.37. Every calculator I tried said 7 x 5 = 35. Anyway, they responded with some bull-crap answer that it was based on the number of items in my order. Ummmm what???? Are you kidding me???

Oh and they also said it was not a sales tax. Hmmmm... the tax is on the sale of the shipping.... therefore, it's a sales tax. And sales tax in the state of NJ is 7% of the charge... not based on the number of items you buy. And either way... there's still no way to come up with the random amount of $0.37.

Sooooo.... I proceeded to research the tax laws myself. And there is when I came upon the clincher! This is the NJ tax law regarding shipping...

"Delivery Charges for Taxable Goods and Services (N.J.S.A. 54:32B-8.11)

The law modifies the exemption for delivery charges that are separately stated from the purchase price of an item on the invoice, bill or similar document given to the purchaser. The law provides for the taxation of delivery charges on taxable items and retains the exemption for delivery charges on nontaxable items like clothing.

The law defines “Delivery Charges” as charges by the seller for preparation and delivery to a location designated by the purchaser of personal property or services including, but not limited to, transportation, shipping, postage, handling, crating, and packing. If a shipment includes both exempt and taxable property, the seller should allocate the delivery charge by using: (1) a percentage based on the total sales price of the taxable property compared to the total sales price of all property in the shipment; or (2) a percentage based on the total weight of the taxable property compared to the total weight of all property in the shipment. N.J.S.A. 54:32B-2(rr). Thus, only the portion of the delivery charge that relates to the taxable property or services is subject to tax. "

I'm not a tax expert (although Hubby is an accountant, if that counts, lol) but the tax code is pretty clearly written. Basically, you cannot charge a tax on the shipment of non-taxable goods. Clothing is a non-taxable good. My entire order consisted of clothing.... therefore the shipping charge is NON-TAXABLE!!!

I emailed the tax code to The Children's Place and very quickly got a response that they would, in fact, be refunding me the $0.37 that I was charged for tax. No apology for my time, inconvenience or aggravation. Also there was no statement that they were in error or that they would be correcting the situation in the future.

So, I was happy that they were giving me that refund, but what about all my past orders??? Yes, I had been charged that "tax" on all my past orders as well. It would only amounts to a few dollars or so, but it really angers me to have money stolen from me like that.

Anyway, I was curious to see if they had made any changes. So I went to their site, threw a few things in my shopping cart, and sure enough, they were all set to charge me that "shipping tax."

Do you shop through The Children's Place? Do you know if you've been robbed? I know it's not much money, but really, how do they get the nerve to charge a tax, that doesn't exist? Racking up a few cents from each customer here and there can make them thousands of dollars.

I'm still undecided if I will shop through them in the future. As I said before, I really like their clothing. I would just have to email them and argue after every single order I placed. Sounds like fun, right?

Crafts? And a printable coupon!

One of things that I hope to do this year, is to get back into my crafts. I've been so busy with my two little ones that I hardly ever get to do my crafts. The closest I've been to anything crafty is coloring with my daughter or the time we made paper dolls.

Anyway, this year I wanna set aside time to work on a few crafts here and there. I know there are several things I'm gonna need from the craft store, but I refuse to pay full price for them.

I just love those coupons for AC Moore and Michaels that offer 40-50% an item. So I usually take Hubby along and we each use a coupon. That way I get all my craft supplies super cheap.

Looking for an extra coupon? Look here for a printable coupon for 50% off one regular price item at AC Moore. Coupon expires 1/10/09.

Get paid to get healthy... 7 days left!

Have you been using Wellness360? If not, read more about the site here and here. Basically they pay you just for using their site. You can do things like read the latest health-related news and research (I LOVE this), view fitness videos and track your daily calorie consumption.

They give you points for each thing you do and those points turn into actual cash. And right now is their quarterly cash out period. So... if you used Wellness360 from October through December and you accumulated at least $25, you need to cash out!

They only allow you to request your check for the first 15 days after the end of the quarter. So that means you have until 1/15/09 to log in and request your check to be mailed to you.

This quarter I didn't earn enough to cash out. Was just too busy with the holidays and all. I think I'm up to about $18. Total bummer cause I'm all about free money. But no worries, because the points carry over to the next quarter, so I'll have a check then.

My first payout from Wellness360 was for over $100! And my second check hasn't arrived yet, but it should be for about $30 or so.

Anyway, if you've been using the site, make sure to log in and check to see if you're able to cash out. Just 7 days left to do this!

Yay... $27.51 in my mailbox today!

I've said this many times before, but really, I get so super excited when I push aside the junk mail and find cash in my mailbox. Well, not cash exactly... don't you know it's not good to send cash in the mail??? Anyway, the cash I'm talking about is in the form of a check. Close enough.

Who sent me a check today??? Send Earnings did! This is my first payout from them and it amounted to $27.51! Yay! I love free money. Who wouldn't???

Anyway, as I said, this is my first time cashing in my earned money with Send Earnings, although I did cash in with Inbox Dollars once before (which is pretty much, exactly the same site!). That check was for just about the same amount too.

For those of you who have no clue what I'm talking about, this is the deal with Send Earnings and Inbox Dollars...

You sign up for your free account. You can even sign up with both sites if you wish. Then they'll send you emails. You quickly view the advertisement in the email and click the link to verify that you have done so. Easy, easy, easy. Then they pay you for each email you read.

Also, they'll pay you extra for shopping through their links, completing surveys, referring friends, and completing offers. You don't have to do all or any of those things. They are all optional. But the more you do, the more you earn. Simple enough.

Now go, make money, and buy yourself something nice. You deserve it.

Am I setting myself up for failure?

It's that time of year again... time for the new year's resolutions. It's 2009... Wow! I'm determined to make it a good year and with my determination comes a laundry list of resolutions.

Maybe some are resolutions and some are goals. either way, I hope I'm not setting myself up for failure with such a long list. But there are several areas in my life that I'd like to improve upon and the only way to do that is to set a goal for myself. You can't get anywhere if you don't know where you're going... if you keep doing what you're doing, you'll keep getting what you're getting... and all of that.

Last year my resolution (I think) was to take my green living another step forward. And I certainly accomplished that one. Every single time we grocery shop, we use canvas bags. Many times when we shop elsewhere, we also use canvas bags. I even have one that conveniently tucks away in my purse.

Another thing we changed this year was eating more organic foods... always organic milk, chicken and ground turkey when we can find it organic, most of our baby foods, and a few other things here and there.

We also switched to using cloth napkins for meals at home and cloth rags for most clean-ups. I can't remember the last time we bought paper napkins or paper towels. Oh, and I've become a bit recycling-obsessed and even went through the trash cans at a party this summer to pull out all the soda cans for recycling. I've also been affectionately called the recycling nazi.

Anyway... on to my list for 2009...

*Catch up and keep up with printing our photos. I always get so far behind in this. Starting this year, I think we will switch to getting photo books printed instead of individual photos that I need to print, sort, date and put into albums. Too much work. And the photo books are way nicer.

*Get out of the house with the kids more. I want to take more walks, get to the park and the beach more, play in the yard more and get to JellyBean Jungle more often since the kids now have a membership.

*Clean up my language. Really, it's bad. And getting worse. It.Must.Be.Stopped.

*Lose weight, and not just with this (review coming!) Seriously, I know this is typical for resolutions, but not for me. I don't like setting goals that I honestly aren't going to be working hard for. So I've never really had a weight loss resolution. But I desperately want to be healthy and stay healthy for my family. I want to do everything that I can to be here for them as long as I can be. And I want to set a good example for my kids. Oh, and I want it to be easier to find cute clothes and actually look good in them. Ha.

*Complete both kids' baby books. Yea, my daughter will be 3 in March and much of her baby book is incomplete. And my son will be 1 in two weeks and his baby book is mostly empty. Sad, but true. I redeem myself in that I do have a personal blog with all of their accomplishments, important dates, pictures, funny stories, etc. But I need to complete the baby books so that one day I can pass them on to my kids and they can have a memento of the early years they will never remember in adulthood.

Ok, so I think that's it. I could go on and say I'd like to keep my house cleaner, my laundry not so piled up, my dishes cleaned and put away in a more timely manner.... but I won't. Ha.
